Help! It’s Been a Crazy Day! (and What You Can Do About It)

We all have crazy days. Here's what you can do about it. (Photo)We all have crazy days. Regardless of what makes it a crazy day, all we want to do is go to bed and hope tomorrow is a whole lot different.

The thing is, these bad days always contain a message. That's the funny part about life; it keeps us on our toes. If we want to avoid having crazy day after crazy day, it requires us to do a little detective work. Life doesn't just magically get better or less hectic; it's our job to reflect and make changes accordingly.

So here are a few key things I strongly suggest when you find yourself having one of those crazy days. I've listed them as do's and don'ts.

Your List of Do's

1. STOP! If you're having a crazy day, stop what you're doing and shift gears. Give yourself an adult time out. Take 10-15 minutes...grab a pen and paper and bring it with you.

2. Take your "time out" wherever it's convenient. Honestly, I often use the bathroom. As weird as that may seem, let's face it, there's a good chance no one will bother you if you're in the 'throne room'. While on your time out, take 10 deep breaths in and out. Breath in deeply. Hold. Breathe out deeply.

3. Take your pen and paper and do what I call a brain drain. Write down every single thing that's on your mind. Don't stop writing for two minutes. Write whatever comes to your mind. In other words, avoid being mindful and focused… just write.

4. Next, ask yourself these three questions and write the answers on your paper. "What is this crazy day trying to show me? What do I need to do differently? What can I change right now in this moment?"

5. Now browse over everything you've written. Circle only a few things that you want to concentrate on for the rest of the day. (Everything else can be transferred to a to-do list…after you get out of the bathroom). πŸ™‚

6. Have a quick chat with The Big Guy (whoever or whatever that might be for you):

"Dear _______________, I am feeling ____________________ but I want to feel ____________________. Please help me choose this feeling now. Thank you. I love you. And so it is."

7. Get out of the bathroom, smile (don't forget to smile) and complete the tasks you circled. These are all that need to get done today. (Trust me, everything else can wait…nobody is going to die).

8. When you get home in the evening reflect about your day. What did you discover when you answered the three questions? What can you change in your life so these crazy days happen less often? Maybe you need help? Maybe you've put your kids in way too many activities? Maybe you've bitten off more than you can chew at work? Maybe you need to be more pro-active? Get clear about what is going on and get clear about how you can improve it.

9. Give yourself permission to make the changes you need to make. Love yourself by honoring your needs always!

Your List of Don'ts

1. Don't pretend nothing is wrong.

2. Don't blame other people for your crazy day. Take full responsibility for your life!

3. Don't give up on happiness (or on anything else for that matter).

4. Don't feel bad about your crazy day; instead learn from it!

5. Don't feel bad about what you need.

6. Don't strive for perfection.

7. Don't assume you have to do everything all by yourself.

8. Don't spend your whole day in the bathroom; people will begin to suspect something. πŸ™‚
