Time Management Tips: Old School vs Digital Savvy

Time Management for Entrepreneurs (Photo)One of the biggest challenges of the digital world is overworking and exhausting the most important resource in your business by using old business time management techniques that no longer work in the digital age.

Take a look at Amy’s story. Amy is a smart, web savvy and confident entrepreneur who owns a fashion shoe store in an upscale neighbourhood. She had used the web to build her fashion shoe empire. On the surface, she was doing relatively well but after one networking event she leaned over to me and whispered, "You know, I think I’m going to lose my business and I don’t know if I’d be devastated. Sometimes I wish all of this would just stop!"

What Amy wanted to stop was the ever present feeling of "not being in control."

She later revealed to me that she was missing orders, delivering late and getting complaints. I suspected that there was something wrong with the way her business was managing its most important resource – time. And that turned out to be correct. Amy’s business was in complete chaos.

You see, Amy and her two employees were using old time management techniques to cope with the challenges of the new digital age. Take a look at these well-intentioned old techniques and see if you can figure out why they crumble in the age of social media:

1.   Old School: Do not check your messages in the morning

The purpose of not checking your messages in the morning is to give yourself time to think about your day, plan the most important activities for the day and finish the most important project before drowning in a bottomless inbox.

This is great advice but my question is what happens when things change?

The needs and wants of your customers are changing rapidly and they are communicating those changes to you more frequently. In this environment, it is the businesses that can listen to and respond to those changes quickly that will survive and grow. These are the businesses that can deliver exactly what the customer wants to keep them happy.

Now, that doesn’t mean that you need to start sleeping with your Blackberries or iPhones. In fact,   that will only kill your productivity. What you need to do instead is to accept the fact that the playing field has changed and then implement a set of digital media savvy business time techniques.

Here’s one of those techniques:

Digital Savvy: Check your messages in the morning and use the new information from these messages to plan the priorities for the rest of the day.


2.   Old School: Buckle down and power through

Another well-intentioned business time advice is to buckle down and power through the day’s tasks.

Productivity needs a relaxed, focused, calm and playful mind to show its magic. This is important because in today’s digital world, you need to provide creative, original, lively and passionate content to engage and nurture customer relationships to break through the cold and faceless world of the internet.

Here’s a better way to get more done in the digital world:

Digital Savvy: Take frequent breaks during your work day and allow yourself to explore new places, blogs and ideas to spark your creativity.

The internet is a challenging medium to master but, as you have already realized, it provides great benefits. As you’re launching your online campaigns, remember that one of the resources you will overwork the most is going to be your time. Set your systems up to help you manage your time and take frequent breaks so you don’t burn out, miss orders or lose customers like Amy did.
