Confidence – A Key to Success

Self-confidence is the key to success (Photo)Have you ever experienced a period where your confidence has held you back from taking advantage of opportunities? Stopped you from achieving your best? I wish I could say no to these questions. Through my work with other business leaders, I have learned we all experience these situations in varying degrees. The difference between success and failure is how we respond to them.

Samuel Johnson once said "Self-confidence is the first requisite to great undertakings.” This is so true. When you have the confidence to take risks, push yourself forward or try something new, you are one step closer to your goals.

A lack of confidence can occur when you:

Don't have a clear vision of what you want to achieve in your career/life.

Many of my coaching clients have a good idea of what they want to achieve but it is not crystal clear. As we explore what they want to achieve in their professional career or as an entrepreneur, they gain confidence when the clarity come through to the fore.

Fail to plan and prepare.

If you want to achieve success, a plan is necessary. Even successful business people who started their business without a business plan say that in hindsight, if they had had a plan they would have avoided some costly mistakes or they would have launched a product/service that wasn't profitable. Preparing involves staying current in your skills and knowledge so that when opportunities come along you are ready.

Hold back instead of act.

This is a common roadblock. An opportunity comes along and fear, or a lack of confidence prevent you from leaning in and capitalizing on it. This lack of confidence may be your way of resisting a situation where you must take on a big risk or where you lack full control. As you stretch, you will incur situations where you must just go with the flow and know your own judgement.  If you experience a setback it is yet another opportunity to make some alterations.

Fail to recognize feedback as an opportunity to review or rejig.

When we lack self-confidence, we are more challenged to take a step forward.  When we take that step, and things don’t go as planned it is not uncommon to take that personally. In this situation you are most like not as open to feedback or suggestions for changes. This feedback is a jewel and can turn a set back into a golden opportunity.

Lose Steam and don't keep on track.

I’m sure you have implemented changes and gone off track when the pressures of work and life get in the way. When your confidence is low, this is even more likely. Using a coach or participating in a mastermind program is one way to guide yourself forward toward success. With recurring successes, your confidence will grow.

Each of us has times when our self-confidence takes a beating and we question our decisions. I love the quote by Walt Disney as he reminds us to remain confident in our own abilities and the successes we can achieve.

"The secret of making dreams come true can be summarized in four C’s.
They are Curiosity, Confidence, Courage, and Constancy;
and the greatest of these is Confidence.”
– Walt Disney
