10 Steps to Optimize Your Website with SEO (Photo)

Getting to the first page of Google is a goal for most small business owners since it gives you the opportunity to been seen by more potential customers. If you are on the first page of Google then that usually means that you are doing a fantastic job on your SEO (search engine optimization), but if you haven’t seen yourself on the first page yet, then maybe you need to do a little tweaking on your site.

If you are anything like me and hear the words SEO, you cringe and just want to hide under a blanket then you are in the right place. This was me a little over two years ago when I started Living Your Moment. I was completely new to the blogging world. Actually, I was completely new to the blogging-for-other-people world. I had a blog solely based on me talking about how my daughter had spit up today. But only my mom and my grandma wanted to read that.

When I started the business back in 2009, I really had no clue there was so much to marketing and promoting a website through SEO. And back then, if you asked me what SEO was, I could regurgitate back to you that it was Search Engine Optimization, and that was it. I couldn’t even break down the words of that phrase to figure out what it meant in the slightest. It was a bunch of mumbo jumbo that made no sense to me. And the description and how to maximize it was a whole other story. I remember one time reading an article – no joke! – 10 different times and saying, “WHAT???” I tried to have my husband explain it to me and he would just send me article after article of what had to be a different language.

I peddled through it and asked questions along the way, but I really started to understand what this all meant when I finally figured out the steps. I thought I was ingenious, but this is really what the articles had been telling me from the beginning.
I want to take the work out of searching all over the internet for you and break it down into easy-to-understand steps that will help you boost your SEO overnight.

So, if you are looking to improve your SEO in a language that you can understand without all the scientific jargon then here are 10 tips that have helped increase the SEO for my own site and for those of my clients as well:

1. Bold a few keywords in your article: For example: I’m writing this article about Search Engine Optimization so I bold those words. Google will pick up on certain bolded words in your work.

2. Outgoing links are great to have: Of course don’t go overboard. Make sure you hyperlink other businesses and your own because this will help bring more clients to your site.

3. CONTENT is so important: You can never hear this enough! Make sure you have articles and posts that are relevant to your site.

4. Main Page: Make sure your articles/posts get listed on your main page at some point. Google will search for keywords from your main page first and grab information from there.

5. Use Natty Keywords in WordPress:  there is a great feature in the custom fields section called natty_keywords and I always put the keywords that I want featured into those fields so that Google can find my articles faster.

6. Update your site regularly: Make sure you update your site with relevant content at least three to four times a week. You want your readers coming back for more.

7. Guest Blog on other sites: If they will let you put a link back to your site, this is even better. You will increase your pingbacks* this way.

8. Link to older articles: Put relevant links from your older articles / posts into a current post that you are writing. This will create a trackback** within your own site.

9. Put keywords into your website’s tagline: The tagline of your website is a great place to put your keywords and of course the title of your site. “Affordable Advertising and Marketing Strategies for MoM Owned Small Businesses through Support and Promotion” is the tagline for my business. So if someone is looking up affordable marketing, mom business, our site is the first site that pops up on Google.

10. It’s never too late to start optimizing your SEO on your site: I wish I had known more about SEO when I started my website, but once I got the hang of it, I completely saw the results!

*Pingback: a remote comment.

Example: Person A posts something on his blog. Person B posts on her own blog, linking to Person A’s post. This automatically sends a pingback to Person A when both have pingback-enabled blogs. Person A’s blog receives the pingback, then automatically goes to Person B’s post to confirm that the pingback did, in fact, originate there.

**Trackback: A form of notification.

Example: Person B wants to comment on Person A’s blog, but wants her own readers to see what she had to say and be able to comment on her blog, so she posts on her own blog and sends a trackback to Person A’s blog. Person A’s blog receives the trackback which is displayed as a comment to the original post. This comment contains a link to Person B’s post.
