By Cathy Kuzel on Apr 25 2011 • Filed under The Connected Woman

Effective marketing uses handwritten notes to build relationships.

Would you like a little something that would help you stand out from your competitors? Something that gets you noticed? Something that just might give you a distinct edge? Something simple, different and easy to implement that costs just pennies?

That ‘something’ is right at your fingertips. A handwritten note. Here are four reasons "Why" handwritten notes are effective. Next month I’ll have five simple ways on "How" to use handwritten notes.

Effective Eloquence

Handwritten notes may be ‘old school’ but they are a rarely used and that’s precisely why they are so powerful. With today’s digital/electronic oriented culture, a simple note will convey several things to your clients. It says that by taking the time and effort to write it (and post it!), your clients are important to you. Your clients know how limited their time is, so they will equate your note with effort and value.

Notes are remembered. For instance, a handwritten thank you note that comes in a handwritten envelope with a good old fashioned stamp is unique and tends to ‘hang around’ the office a bit longer.

It’s Personal

Because of their personal nature and tangible quality, people have a tough time throwing notes out. It seems to be ‘bad form’ when it comes to tossing a note into the recycling bin so people have a tendency to keep them and when they keep them, they keep YOU on their desk! "How thoughtful!"

When you do something classy, unique and thoughtful, most people feel a compelling need to reciprocate. For example, because they now feel compelled to acknowledge you and your gesture, clients tend to take your call or respond to your emails or voice messages.

Notes can also help you get past gatekeepers and engage in a conversation with the recipient. When you get past the gatekeeper, your contact rate increases. And when your contact rate increases, so does the opportunity to acquire more business!

Notes can be the ‘tipping point’ that enables you to stand out in the crowd. In this highly competitive world of business, The note you send today could possibly give you new business tomorrow.
