How-To: Make a Vision Board

By Elena Pezzini on Jul 29 2010 • Filed under How-To

Vision Boards, also known as Treasure Maps, are useful tools to help you visualize your work and life goals, and they also act as a reminder to help us stay focussed.

There are three main ways to make a Vision Board.

  • paper (ie. collage)
  • digital (ie. powerpoint)
  • video

How to make a PAPER Vision Board:

The quickest, easiest, and most low-tech way of making a vision board is to get poster board and make a paper collage using cut-outs from magazines, clip art, and drawings.

1. Decide if you want a big one or small one. Part of your decision will come down to what you have space for. If you want a small one, you can even just use a sheet of paper as your base. If large, use poster board.

2. Think about the types of things you wish to achieve. What do you want to have in your life? Where do you want to live? Do you want to travel? Do you want kids? If you have kids, do you want them to go to university? What type of work do you want to do? What type of business do you want to have? What did you used to imagine you’d be doing, when you were a child? Do those dreams still resonate with you?

3. Cut out photographs, words, and other images from magazine, draw pictures and/or snip out words that correspond to the things that are important to you. You can also find images on the internet and print them off.

4. Glue everything onto your sheet of paper or poster board.

5. Place your finished board where you can see it. You can even frame your board and hang it like your own art masterpiece.

6. You can add, remove, or change the pictures on your board whenever you want, or do new ones as your vision changes/progresses.

If you don’t have a clear vision of something now, you can add it later. For example, maybe you know you want to have your own business, and you want financial security, but you don’t know yet what type of business you want. For now, you can cut out pictures that represent financial security, or working for yourself, and then as you do research and gain a clearer vision of what the business might be, you can add/change the pictures.

How to make a DIGITAL Vision Board:

Use this Powerpoint template and check out this completed example (with feng shui) at right for ideas on how to make a digital/electronic one. You may fully edit the file our client created to your liking.

1. To add pictures, go to Google Images and search for a picture by typing in a keyword . For example, type in “Jacuzzi” and click “search images.”

2. When you find something you like, right click the picture, click “copy image” and then go to the Powerpoint file.

3. In the PowerPoint file, either (A) click “edit”on the top left, then click “paste” or (B) right click to bring up menu and click "paste"

4. Now you can resize and move the photo as needed.

To resize, place cursor on a corner dot, click left mouse button and, while holding the button down, move mouse/cursor in or out. If you don't see dots, place cursor on image and click once. Let go when it's the size you want.

To move image, left click and, while still holding the button down, move mouse. Let go when it's where you want.

5. When satisfied, click “save.”

6. Repeat.

We encourage you to be as detailed as possible. Add words, dates, images, and change colors. Be creative! The more specific you are, the faster you are likely to attain your dreams.

When you are done,  place your Digital Vision Board everywhere, on as many places as possible. For example: your computer screensaver and mobile phone wall paper. Print out hard copies and post them on your fridge, in your car, your wall, and more.

The more times you consciously or unconsciously see it or pass by it, the more…

You can finish the sentence!

How to make a Vision VIDEO:

Vision videos are more multi-dimensional and multi-sensory than boards because they involve the auditory and kinesthetic senses, utilizing principles learned in self-hypnosis and neuro-linguistic programming.

The more senses you involve, the more you “brain wash” yourself to accomplish your goals. You could move your body and burn scented candles while you look at a paper/digital Vision Board, or watch a Vision Video.

The videos and the boards become your personal coaches, confidantes and mentors. To make similar vision videos, you can use free or low-cost software applications from the internet, or use the video software that came with your computer, if it has any. Most computers come with those applications, such as Windows Mobie Maker.

In this video, we combined images, visual words (captions), spoken words (inspiring and empowering declarations/mottos/mantras), and interesting video camera shooting, with brainwave sounds used in hypnosis and meditation.

(If you’d like the brainwave sounds at no charge, email: and put "Brainwave Request" in the subject line.)

In conclusion, have fun creating your new vision board! You can only gain!

  1. Vision boards are great fun. If you don’t have a lot of space, you can do up a ‘Vision book” instead. (If you have a LOT of space, you can do up an entire Vision Wall!)

If you want some guided help in freeing up your creativity you can participate in workshops to learn about making vision boards, altered books, and Dreams and Goals maps, (you may find some available through your local community centres), get books out of the library, or you can buy online products to help you.

You can also get some information online via YouTube! They have some great videos on making altered books.

  2. Great idea.
about us :East world Market works with less privileged women artisans in Pakistan and trying to market their products USA etc.We have a very clear vision and mission
    “Empowerment of women through creativity.”

  3. This is some really good information. I also enjoyed the information from the replies. Thanks!! I’ll get started on mine soon.

  4. This is awesome!my vision is so big.

    • Just as the Bible says write down the vision and make it clear…This is a bold step to take then the next is to follow it to the letter. you should be passionately driven not pen driven so to say.
The moment you realize every decision you make affects the lives of generations unborn the faster you become.
      God Bless you …

  5. i like 2 use a large wallpaper for my vision board

  6. I like to use a large corkboard for my vision board. I can re-arrange and add to it

  7. Our company does this for a living! We help ladies gather their thoughts and design a vision board. Thanks for the other 2 options. We actually gather together in a 4 hour workshop where ladies bring their images and walk away with a bona-fide Vision Board! In the sessions, they talk about obstacles, design an action plan, meet new friends and overall have a fantastic social networking time. We’ve been doing them quarterly since 2006. I would love to come to Canada to facilitate one!!
