How colour affects mood

By Leslie Redshaw on Apr 05 2010 • Filed under Life

Choosing just the “right colour”  is often the most daunting part of any decorating project or shopping excursion. How many times have you lost sleep trying to decide how to choose that perfect outfit for the interview, or the right shade of red shoes?

Many of us are juggling schedules and have become quite adept at running businesses, families, and carpools but when it comes to choosing colours…ugh! Let me assure you, you are not alone: only 15% of the population is visual (and often already in the field of colour, fashion and design). So if you are in finance, medicine, education, technology, or some other field, chances are colour’s not your specialty.

You don't need to be an expert, but it  is important to know the basics.

Colour, when used properly, is a key factor in getting your image across and creating an impression for success. We all know how crucial that first impression is and getting it right the first time is often all the time we have. I’m going to introduce you to an invaluable business partner and explain how to use him to your advantage for your business and personal space, and wardrobe.

Meet MR. ROY G BIV. He stands for Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet (a.k.a. purple). If you think you're “just not that into him” think again. He can help enhance productivity, improve your image, create more fun, more wealth, and more time…all with colour!

MR. ROY G BIV is often given a bad rap. You may have heard he’s complicated or all over the board with thousands of personalities, or “colours.” Fact is, there's only six, with variable shades, tints, hues and tones which just proves how multi-talented he really is. Do not underestimate the power of colour, the influence it has and what it can do for you.

Let me share the personal, powerful and influential side of Mr. ROY G BIV:

Red
– Exciting and Passionate. Red is warm and sensual especially when we think of the ever popular red lipstick and red roses. How about the sense of urgency with red lights, stop signs and fire trucks? It can increase your appetite and is known to raise blood pressure. Red can represent aggressiveness and can be a real attention grabber, hence the “red dress” and we all know what a statement that makes!

Orange – Dependable and Strong. Orange is a fun, fresh, bright colour. Think of oranges, fall leaves or the setting sun. It complements yellows and reds and adds a feeling of warmth and comfort like cinnamon spice and pumpkin pie. Pairs great with brown to ensure a down-to-earth feeling.

Yellow – Friendly and Cheerful. Yellow is a colour of concentration and clarity. That’s why Post-It notes are yellow; it enhances memory. It’s also a lively, energetic colour. How much better do you feel on a bright sunny day?

Green – Compatible and Adaptable. Green is everywhere in nature and in many variations. It often blends in and allows other colours to do their jobs. Think about fields of canola or lavender. Do you see the green? Often we see the yellows and purples while green just sits quietly in the background, letting the other colours take center stage. Green represents new growth and sustainability.

Blue
– Soothing and Relaxing. Think of the ocean and the sky. Blue is trustworthy, like a great pair of blue jeans. This is why many volunteer and police organizations, and the “blue collar” guy, wear it. Pair blue with your black power suit and you’re not only authoritative but trustworthy. Blue is a great team player and works well with other colours.

Indigo, Violet (or Purple) – Creative and Spiritual. Purple is the colour of fun and shares properties from both blue and red. It’s a passionate yet peaceful colour with a calming and creative vibe. Soothing lavenders to rich eggplant, purple has a long history associated with royalty and wealth.

Using colour in your space to enhance or create a mood, project an image or add more fun and excitement doesn’t have to be expensive. A coat of paint can be the least expensive element in the room for the most impact. The right colour can make the old look new and new look fabulous!

And for those who aren’t brave enough to paint the walls in colour and want a more neutral background like beige, gray or white, bringing colour in through art and decorative accents like pillows or desk accessories can liven up a room in an instant. This works the same in your wardrobe: keeping your basic pieces neutral, like a black suit or gray skirt, and having fun with colours in your blouses, shoes and accessories can make for a very impactful impression.

Keep in mind, colour is not just what we see, but how it makes us feel.
