How Do You Hire a VA?

If you read my last article and you find yourself screaming “She’s talking about me!” then it’s time to begin the process of determining who is the right Virtual Assistant for you. As mentioned in my last article, the first thing you need to do is determine what tasks you need help with in your business, that if taken off your plate, would result in less stress and a higher income for you.

There are some things that you definitely need to remember when you go through the process of hiring a virtual assistant, and there will be other questions that will be specific to your business or requirements that will need addressing as well. Here are few items that will make the process a bit easier.

When you hire a virtual assistant, you are building a relationship. With this in mind, you want to make sure, as best you can, that your personal style and that of your prospective VA align. This will make the transition much easier for both of you and give you some piece of mind that you are “speaking the same language.”

You will want to determine your prospective VA’s professionalism, attention to detail, speed in responding to requests, and skills and expertise that they possess.

Some great questions to ask in the interviewing process are:

  • What is their work background?
  • How many years have they been offering Virtual Assistant services?
  • What area do they feel their strength lies in?
  • What do they enjoy doing most?
  • What do they enjoy doing the least?

Another good question to ask is if they have any certification. Virtual Assistants can get certified by taking courses or programs through sites like or . Finding a Virtual Assistant with certification can confirm that they have the skills that you are looking for, albeit there are some fabulous Virtual Assistants who may not be certified for every specialty they offer, but are self-taught and equally as motivated.

Remember that Virtual Assistants are contractors. It is important to have a consultation with your prospective VA, to both help you determine how they can help you, as well as enable them to determine the complexity of the work, timeframe and skills sets required before quoting you a rate.

It is imperative for both you and the VA you have chosen to sign a contract, outlining the agreed upon duties, responsibilities and rates. This keeps expectations on both sides in check and allows for a more positive relationship, as well as an opportunity to end the contract, based on the terms, if the relationship ends up not being well suited.

Ultimately it all comes back to relationships and how well you feel your new Virtual Assistant will mesh with your style and business needs. If you feel comfortable with the answers provided, feel like you have made a connection in your phone or live interview, then I would suggest, go with your gut.

To be sure, credentials, references and samples of work needs to be there but ultimately it comes down to “is this person going to be an extension of me and my business. Would I be proud to have her on my team?”
