Defining The Winning Image

By Deborah Reynolds on Oct 28 2009 • Filed under Life

A few months ago I was sitting with a terrific group of people and the conversation moved into sharing life stories. I was pleasantly surprised about the common thread among us: we were all driven and passionate. One person had that great positive attitude that was part of her life since the earliest years and no matter what obstacle was thrown her way, out of her mouth uttered the words, “it can’t be that hard” and after a closer examination, “it’s easy – I can do that!” A few people who were immigrants had taken on the attitude they were no different from others and dared to fit in – never being held down and never being invisible. Each one had a dream and made consistent progress towards the dream, being open to seeing and receiving whatever opportunities lay before them, and seizing them immediately. Each person had a fire in their belly – a determination that drove them forward. It reminded me of that last episode of American Idol with five remaining contestants. Allison Iraheta was the remaining female – only 16 when she auditioned. When she finished singing her Rat Pack favorite, Simon Cowell asked her that all important question – do you think you can win? She hesitated and said yes. He didn’t believe she had that unwavering belief inside of her. I didn’t believe it either. Yet, there was no doubt she had extraordinary talent and was one of the best. Having confidence and talent to push through is one thing; having that driving passion to win is something different. You don’t even have to be the smartest or the best to win, but you do have to want it and do whatever it takes to get it. And far too many give up on their dreams because they won’t do whatever it takes to get it. It has nothing to do with whether they can do it, it’s whether they will. The persistence, focus, discipline, and follow through is key.

"Having the idea and the desire to accomplish something is only part of the equation."

Those with the winning image make everything count. They are involved and seek help where they can. They are always thinking, strategizing, testing. They never give up. Even when it appears as if their spirit has been broken and they are down and out, they get back up again. It’s because the dream they so tightly hold onto is much bigger than them. Their reason for pushing on is much bigger than them. The reason – the why – is the driving force behind them which keeps them going and going. How passionate are you about what it is you are doing? Can you see yourself getting it? Do you believe you can do it? Do you have a reason big enough for wanting the goals you have set? Are you willing to do whatever it takes? Do you have that winning image – the follow through to the finish line? Are you making everything count and giving everything you have? Having the idea and the desire to accomplish something is only part of the equation. The other part is doing the work: putting in the time, energy, and activity to push your goals forward. You have to give to get. Wouldn’t it be nice to have that winning image – to be able to say “I’ve got the edge?” It’s entirely possible. Believe in yourself and value what you have to offer. You can do amazing things, but you have to take action – you have to take the first step towards your goals and never give up.
